1938First ascent of the Eiger north faceHeckmair, Vörg, Harrer and Kasparek climb the NordwandA German-Austrian team made the first ascent of the Eiger's north face in the Bernese Alps. Several earlier attempts had ended in deaths. Heinrich Harrer later wrote the classic account "The White Spider".
1938 – 2016Janet Reno (1938-2016)Died 7 November 2016, aged 78Reno served as U.S. Attorney General from 1993 to 2001, the first woman to hold the position and the longest-serving Attorney General in the 20th century. Her tenure included the Waco siege and the Elian Gonzalez custody case. She later lived with Parkinson's disease.
