1936Gone with the Wind publishedMargaret Mitchell's novel of the American SouthMargaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind, set during the Civil War and Reconstruction, was published by Macmillan. It became one of the best-selling American novels and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. The 1939 film adaptation was also a huge success.
1936Haile Selassie addresses the League of NationsExiled emperor appeals for help at GenevaHaile Selassie spoke to the League of Nations Assembly in Geneva and condemned the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, including its use of chemical weapons. He warned that it would be "us today, you tomorrow". The League lifted its sanctions on Italy soon afterwards.
