1908 – 1934Baby Face Nelson (1908-1934)Died 27 November 1934, aged 25American bank robber and associate of John Dillinger. He died of his wounds after a gunfight with FBI agents near Barrington, Illinois, in which he killed two of them.
1934Amateur Night at the Apollo -- debut performanceFitzgerald enters the Apollo Theatre Amateur Night competition in Harlem in November 1934, intending to dance. Backstage she loses her nerve and decides to sing instead -- performing a song in the style of Connie Boswell, her idol. She wins the competition. The Apollo Amateur Night is the most important talent showcase in Black American entertainment; winning it changes Fitzgerald's life. She is 17, living in poverty and unknown. Within a year she will be performing with one of the most celebrated bands in jazz.

1934Ataturk converts Hagia Sophia to a museumOn 24 November 1934, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk signs the decree converting Hagia Sophia from a mosque to a museum -- a secular act intended to demonstrate the Turkish Republic's rejection of Ottoman religious identity and its embrace of a modern, inclusive national identity. The building opens as a museum on 1 February 1935. The mosaics are revealed as the plaster covering them is removed over subsequent decades. UNESCO designates it a World Heritage Site in 1985 as part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul. For 86 years it is the most visited tourist site in Turkey, welcoming millions of visitors of all faiths.
