1867 – 1934Marie Curie (1867-1934)Died 4 July 1934, aged 66Polish-French physicist and chemist who pioneered research on radioactivity and discovered polonium and radium. She was the first person to win Nobel Prizes in two sciences. She died of aplastic anaemia caused by radiation exposure.

1934Night of the Long KnivesHitler purges the SA leadership and political rivalsHitler ordered the SS and Gestapo to kill Ernst Röhm and the SA leadership along with conservative opponents, including former chancellor Kurt von Schleicher. At least 85 people were killed. The purge secured the support of the army for the Nazi regime.

He had earlier made his name as a writer and performer on British television comedy. He co-wrote for shows including The Frost Report and At Last the 1948 Show.
