1932The FBI crime laboratory opensForensic science becomes a federal functionThe Bureau of Investigation opened its Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory in Washington DC, beginning as a single room with borrowed equipment. It grew into one of the largest forensic laboratories in the world and helped establish fingerprinting, ballistics and document analysis as standard investigative tools.
