1932Marjan Berk born in ZeistMarie-Janne van Baaren is born in Zeist, Utrecht, the daughter of parents who divorce when she is five years old. With her mother and younger brother she moves to Amersfoort, where her mother runs a small boarding house. During the Second World War the family shelters people in hiding; from one of them the young Marie-Janne contracts scarlet fever. The Amersfoort boarding house is her entire childhood world -- a small, female-run household on the margins of bourgeois Dutch society, which later informs her novels' recurrent interest in women navigating constrained circumstances with wit and resilience.
