• 1932 Cockcroft and Walton split the atom First nuclear reaction driven by an accelerator John Cockcroft and Ernest Walton fired accelerated protons at lithium nuclei at the Cavendish Laboratory, splitting them into alpha particles. It was the first nuclear transmutation produced by artificially accelerated particles.
