1853 – 1931 Kitasato Shibasaburō (1853-1931) Died 13 June 1931, aged 78 Japanese bacteriologist who co-discovered the infectious agent of bubonic plague in 1894. He also developed serum therapy for tetanus with Emil von Behring. He founded the Kitasato Institute in Tokyo.
