1928Okeechobee hurricaneCategory 4 storm devastates Puerto Rico and FloridaA powerful hurricane hit Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas, and then made landfall near West Palm Beach, Florida. Storm surge from Lake Okeechobee drowned about 2,500 people in Florida, most of them Black migrant farm workers. It prompted the construction of the Herbert Hoover Dike.
