1859 – 1927Svante Arrhenius (1859-1927)Died 2 October 1927, aged 68Svante Arrhenius was a Swedish chemist who won the 1903 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his theory of electrolytic dissociation. In 1896 he made one of the first calculations of how carbon dioxide warms the Earth.
1927Carving of Mount Rushmore beginsWork starts on the presidential monument in South DakotaSculptor Gutzon Borglum and a crew of about 400 workers began carving the granite face of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills. The monument depicts Washington, Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Lincoln. Work continued until 1941.
