During his 18 years at the Fed, Greenspan navigated the 1987 Black Monday crash, the savings and loan crisis, the dot-com bubble, the 9/11 attacks and the longest peacetime economic expansion in American history. His monetary philosophy — keeping interest rates low, trusting financial markets to self-regulate, and using the Fed's bully pulpit to guide market expectations — was influential beyond measure. The 2008 financial crisis, which struck two years after his retirement, forced a devastating reassessment of those beliefs. Greenspan famously admitted to Congress in 2008 that he had found 'a flaw' in his ideology.
