1868 – 1926Gertrude Bell (1868-1926)Died 12 July 1926, aged 57Gertrude Bell, the British writer, archaeologist and political officer who helped draw the borders of the modern state of Iraq, died in Baghdad from an overdose of sleeping pills. She had been one of the few women with real influence over British policy in the Middle East after the First World War.
