His elegant equations illuminated fundamental processes from photosynthesis and cell metabolism to the functioning of batteries and solar cells. Born in Montreal, he taught himself theory after repeatedly breaking laboratory glassware, and continued active research past his 100th birthday. He died five days before his 103rd birthday.
