1922Great Fire of SmyrnaThe city burns amid the end of the Greco-Turkish WarA fire devastated the Greek and Armenian quarters of Smyrna (modern Izmir) between 13 and 22 September 1922, days after Turkish nationalist forces retook the city at the close of the Greco-Turkish War. Tens of thousands of civilians died, and hundreds of thousands fled by sea. The event accelerated the population exchange between Greece and Turkey formalized the following year.
