1922Insulin First Used to Treat DiabetesLeonard Thompson becomes the first patient successfully treatedOn 11 January 1922 a purified insulin extract, developed by Frederick Banting, Charles Best, and James Collip at the University of Toronto, was used to treat 14-year-old diabetic patient Leonard Thompson. The treatment dramatically lowered his blood sugar and marked the first effective therapy for type 1 diabetes. Banting and colleague John Macleod received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine later that year.
