1922Egyptian Independence DeclaredBritain ends its protectorate over EgyptOn 28 February 1922 the United Kingdom unilaterally declared Egypt an independent sovereign state, ending the protectorate imposed in 1914. Sultan Fuad I took the title of King of Egypt. Britain retained control over the Suez Canal, defense, and Sudan under reserved powers.
