1921First Miss America pageantAtlantic City beauty contest crowns Margaret GormanAtlantic City held its first Miss America pageant, then called the "Inter-City Beauty" contest, as part of a fall festival aimed at extending the summer tourist season. Sixteen-year-old Margaret Gorman of Washington, D.C. won the inaugural title. The contest grew into an annual American media institution.
