1880 – 1918Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918)Died 9 November 1918, aged 38French poet and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire, a leading champion of Cubism and coiner of the term 'Surrealism', died of the Spanish flu in Paris two days before the Armistice. He had earlier been wounded in the head while serving at the front. His experimental poetry collections, including Calligrammes, influenced a generation of avant-garde writers.
