1918 – 1920The influenza pandemicWorldwideFirst recorded at a Kansas army camp and spread by troop movements, the pandemic killed somewhere between 25 and 50 million people — more than the war itself. Wartime censorship meant only neutral Spain reported it freely, which is how it got its name.
