• 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood US Marines halt German advance near Paris American and French forces fought German troops for control of Belleau Wood northwest of Château-Thierry, in some of the fiercest fighting US Marines had yet experienced. The battle helped stop the German spring offensive's push toward Paris. American casualties were heavy, and the engagement became a foundational episode in Marine Corps history.
