1918Iceland becomes a sovereign stateAct of Union places Iceland in personal union with DenmarkThe Danish-Icelandic Act of Union came into force, recognizing Iceland as a fully sovereign kingdom in personal union with Denmark, sharing only a monarch and foreign policy. The agreement ended direct Danish governance of Icelandic affairs. Iceland became a fully independent republic in 1944.
1918Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes proclaimedSouth Slavic peoples unite in a new Balkan kingdomSerbia, joined by the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs formed from former Austro-Hungarian territories, proclaimed the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes under the Serbian Karađorđević dynasty. The new state united most South Slavic peoples for the first time under one government. It was renamed Yugoslavia in 1929.
