1909RMS Republic sinks after collisionFirst maritime rescue coordinated by wireless distress callThe liner RMS Republic collided with the Italian ship SS Florida in fog off Nantucket on 23 January 1909 and sank the next day. Its wireless operator's CQD distress calls brought other ships to rescue nearly all 1,500 passengers and crew, in one of the first uses of radio to save lives at sea. Six people died in the initial collision.
