1908General Motors foundedWilliam Durant incorporates a new automobile holding companyWilliam C. Durant incorporated General Motors in Flint, Michigan, initially combining Buick with other small manufacturers. The company grew rapidly through acquisitions and became one of the world's largest automakers. It would come to dominate the American auto industry for much of the twentieth century.
1908First fatal airplane crashOrville Wright's Army test flight crashes at Fort MyerOrville Wright was demonstrating the Wright Flyer to the United States Army when a propeller failed and the aircraft crashed. Passenger Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge died from his injuries, becoming the first person killed in a powered airplane crash. Wright survived with serious injuries.
