1908Austria-Hungary annexes BosniaThe Bosnian CrisisVienna converts thirty years of occupation into outright annexation without consulting anybody. Serbia, which had wanted the province, mobilises and then backs down when Russia — still broken by Japan and 1905 — cannot support it. Germany's open backing of Austria humiliates St Petersburg, which resolves never to be caught out again. Six years later a Bosnian Serb shoots the Archduke in Sarajevo and Russia does not back down.
