1906Santos-Dumont flies the 14-bisIn front of witnessesAlberto Santos-Dumont flies a boxy canard biplane before a crowd and an official commission in the Bois de Boulogne, taking off under its own power with no catapult, rails or headwind. It wins the first aviation prizes ever awarded in Europe. The Wrights had flown three years earlier but had done so privately, and much of the world does not yet believe them, which is why Brazil still teaches Santos-Dumont as the father of flight.
