1905Mutiny aboard the battleship PotemkinCrew revolt over rotten meat spreads to OdessaSailors on the Russian battleship Potemkin mutinied after being served maggot-infested meat, killing several officers and taking control of the ship. The mutineers sailed to Odessa, where their arrival coincided with a bloody crackdown on striking workers. The episode became a lasting symbol of revolutionary defiance, later dramatized in Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 film.
1905Mutiny on the PotemkinOver rotten meatThe crew of the battleship Potemkin refuse borscht made with maggoty beef, an officer threatens to shoot them, and the ship ends the day under the control of its sailors with seven officers dead. The Potemkin steams to Odessa, where the city is already in revolt, and troops fire on crowds at the harbour steps. The ship eventually surrenders in Romania. Eisenstein films it twenty years later and the sequence on the steps, which he largely invented, becomes better known than the mutiny.
