1905Bloody SundayA petition, and a volleySome tens of thousands of workers process to the Winter Palace behind Father Georgy Gapon, carrying icons and portraits of the Tsar, to hand over a petition asking for an eight-hour day, a living wage and an elected assembly. The Guard opens fire. Estimates of the dead run from around a hundred to several times that. Nicholas II is not even in the city. The petitioners had addressed him as their father, and by the evening that relationship is finished. Old Style 9 January.
1905Bloody Sunday massacre in St. PetersburgTroops fire on peaceful petitioners, igniting the 1905 RevolutionImperial Guard troops opened fire on an unarmed crowd marching to present a petition to Tsar Nicholas II at the Winter Palace, killing hundreds. The massacre destroyed remaining faith in the tsar among ordinary Russians and triggered a wave of strikes and uprisings across the empire. It is widely regarded as the spark that ignited the Revolution of 1905.
