1904PS General Slocum DisasterPassenger steamboat fire kills over 1,000 in New YorkThe steamboat General Slocum caught fire in New York's East River while carrying a church group on an excursion, killing more than 1,000 passengers, most of them women and children. It remained the deadliest disaster in New York City history until the September 11 attacks. The tragedy led to sweeping new safety regulations for passenger vessels.
