1902Eruption of Mount PeléeVolcanic eruption destroys Saint-Pierre, MartiniqueMount Pelée erupted violently on the morning of May 8, killing nearly all of the roughly 28,000 residents of Saint-Pierre in a pyroclastic flow. It remains the deadliest volcanic eruption of the 20th century and prompted the scientific classification of Peléan eruptions.
