• 1901 Capture of Emilio Aguinaldo US forces seize the Philippine revolutionary leader On 23 March 1901 American troops under General Frederick Funston captured Emilio Aguinaldo, president of the First Philippine Republic, in a raid on his hideout at Palanan. Aguinaldo subsequently swore allegiance to the United States and called on his remaining forces to lay down arms. His capture severely weakened the Philippine resistance to American rule.
