• 1901 The Platt Amendment Independence, with conditions The United States makes withdrawal from Cuba conditional on terms written into the Cuban constitution: no treaties with other powers, no debt beyond what revenues can service, an American right to intervene, and a naval station on lease. The station is Guantanamo Bay. Cuba becomes formally independent in 1902 and effectively a protectorate until the amendment is repealed in 1934.
