• 1901 New Zealand Annexes the Cook Islands Pacific island group placed under New Zealand administration On 11 June 1901 the Cook Islands and Niue were annexed by New Zealand, transferring them from direct British colonial control. The move extended New Zealand's presence in the South Pacific. The islands remained under New Zealand administration into the twentieth century.
