1871 – 1900Stephen Crane (1871-1900)Died 5 June 1900, aged 28An American novelist and poet best known for his Civil War novel The Red Badge of Courage, Crane wrote vividly despite never having witnessed battle when he composed it. He also worked as a war correspondent covering conflicts in Greece and Cuba. He died of tuberculosis in Germany at age 28.
1900Siege of the International LegationsBoxer rebels besiege foreign diplomats in BeijingChinese Boxer rebels and imperial troops besieged the foreign legation quarter in Beijing for 55 days. An Eight-Nation Alliance force fought its way into the city and relieved the legations on 14 August 1900. The episode marked a major escalation of foreign intervention in China.
1900 – 1979Louis Mountbatten (1900-1979)Died 27 August 1979, aged 79Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India and a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, was killed when the IRA planted a bomb on his fishing boat off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland. Three others, including his 14-year-old grandson, also died in the attack. His assassination was one of the most prominent killings of the Troubles.
