1839 – 1899Alfred Sisley (1839-1899)Died 29 January 1899, aged 59British-born painter and leading figure of French Impressionism, known for landscapes along the Seine and Loing rivers. He spent most of his career in France but never obtained French citizenship. He died in Moret-sur-Loing in poverty, only gaining wide recognition after his death.
1899Anglo-Egyptian Condominium established over SudanJoint British-Egyptian rule beginsBritain and Egypt signed an agreement on 19 January 1899 establishing joint sovereignty over Sudan, following the reconquest of the territory the previous year. The arrangement gave Britain effective control while nominally sharing authority with Egypt. Sudan remained under this condominium until independence in 1956.
