1811 – 1899Robert Bunsen (1811-1899)Died 16 August 1899, aged 88German chemist who pioneered spectroscopy and co-discovered the elements caesium and rubidium. The gas burner used in laboratories worldwide bears his name, though he did not invent it himself. He spent most of his career at the University of Heidelberg.
