1897Tate Gallery opens in LondonNew national gallery for British art opens on MillbankThe National Gallery of British Art, funded by sugar magnate Henry Tate and soon known as the Tate Gallery, opened to the public on 21 July 1897. It housed British paintings including works donated by Tate himself, forming the core of what is now Tate Britain. The gallery later expanded into one of the world's major collections of British and modern art.
