• 1896 Treaty of Addis Ababa signed Italy recognizes Ethiopian independence The Treaty of Addis Ababa, signed on 26 October 1896, formally ended the First Italo-Ethiopian War following Ethiopia's victory at Adwa. Italy recognized Ethiopia as a fully independent state, abandoning the earlier Treaty of Wuchale that Italy had used to claim a protectorate. Ethiopia remained one of the only uncolonized states in Africa.
