1896First long-distance AC power transmission from Niagara FallsAlternating current lights up BuffaloOn 16 November 1896 the Niagara Falls Power Company transmitted alternating current electricity roughly 20 miles to the city of Buffalo, New York. The project, built on Nikola Tesla's AC patents and engineered with Westinghouse backing, proved that electricity could be generated at a distance from where it was used. It became a model for large-scale electrification worldwide.
