1896Battle of AdwaEthiopia defeats an invading Italian armyOn 1 March 1896 Ethiopian forces under Emperor Menelik II decisively defeated an invading Italian army near the town of Adwa. The victory ended Italy's attempt to colonize Ethiopia and made it the only African state to successfully repel a European colonial invasion in this period. It became a lasting symbol of African resistance to colonialism.
