1896Utah becomes a stateAdmitted as the 45th US stateUtah was admitted to the Union on 4 January 1896 as the 45th state, ending decades of delay tied to the Mormon practice of polygamy. Statehood followed the 1890 Manifesto in which the LDS Church formally renounced the practice. Salt Lake City became the new state capital.
