His political career collapsed after he resigned from the cabinet in 1886 in a failed gambit for greater influence. He was the father of Winston Churchill.
1895Henrik Bull's expedition lands at Cape AdareFirst confirmed human landing on the Antarctic mainlandOn 24 January 1895 members of Henrik Bull's Norwegian whaling and exploration expedition, aboard the Antarctic, went ashore at Cape Adare. It is regarded as the first confirmed landing by humans on the Antarctic continent. The landing helped open the era of Antarctic exploration that followed in the early twentieth century.
