1895Jameson Raid beginsBotched British raid into the Transvaal destabilizes southern AfricaOn 29 December 1895 Leander Starr Jameson led an armed raid of British colonial police into the South African Republic (Transvaal), intending to spark an uprising among foreign workers against the Boer government. The raid failed within days and Jameson was captured, but it inflamed tensions between Britain and the Boer republics. It is widely seen as a contributing cause of the Second Boer War.
