• 1894 International Olympic Committee founded Pierre de Coubertin's congress plans the revival of the Olympic Games Delegates meeting at the Sorbonne in Paris founded the International Olympic Committee on 23 June 1894, at a congress organized by Pierre de Coubertin. The committee set out to revive the ancient Olympic Games as a modern international sporting event. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens two years later.
