The House of Lords rejected it by an overwhelming margin a week later, ending the effort until the next home rule bill in 1912.
1893New Zealand grants women the voteElectoral Act 1893 receives royal assentNew Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant women the right to vote in parliamentary elections. The Electoral Act 1893 followed years of campaigning led by Kate Sheppard and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Women voted for the first time in the general election that November.
