1891Chace Act signedUnited States extends copyright to foreign authorsThe United States enacted the International Copyright Act, known as the Chace Act, extending limited copyright protection to foreign authors for the first time. It required foreign works to be manufactured in the US to qualify for protection. The law marked a step toward American participation in international copyright norms.
