1890Wounded Knee MassacreUS troops kill Lakota Ghost Dance followers in South DakotaUS Army troops of the 7th Cavalry killed several hundred Lakota men, women, and children at Wounded Knee Creek in South Dakota. The massacre followed the killing of Chief Sitting Bull two weeks earlier and effectively ended the Ghost Dance movement and armed Native American resistance on the Great Plains. It is widely regarded as the last major confrontation of the American Indian Wars.
