1888Great Blizzard of 1888 paralyzes the Northeastern United StatesRecord snowfall kills hundreds and buries citiesA massive nor'easter dumped up to 50 inches of snow across New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut from March 11 to 14, 1888. Snowdrifts reached over 50 feet, downing telegraph lines and stranding trains, and the storm killed more than 400 people. The disaster spurred New York City to move its utility lines underground and helped inspire the construction of the subway system.
