• 1888 Schoolchildren's Blizzard strikes the Great Plains Sudden storm kills scores of children walking home from school A ferocious blizzard swept from Montana to Texas on January 12, 1888, with temperatures plunging rapidly after an unusually warm morning had lured many farmers and schoolchildren outdoors without heavy coats. An estimated 235 people died, many of them children caught walking home from rural schoolhouses. The storm became known afterward as the Schoolchildren's Blizzard.
