1888Stanley relieves Emin Pasha at Lake AlbertExpedition reaches besieged governor of EquatoriaHenry Morton Stanley's Emin Pasha Relief Expedition reached Emin Pasha's forces on Lake Albert in April 1888, after a grueling march through the Congo rainforest that cost many expedition members' lives. Emin initially declined to be evacuated, and the party did not leave the region together until 1889. The expedition was heavily criticized afterward for its high death toll and brutal treatment of porters and local populations.
