1887Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg becomes Prince of BulgariaElected by the Bulgarian National AssemblyFerdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha is elected Prince of Bulgaria by the Bulgarian National Assembly, filling the throne vacated by Alexander of Battenberg's abdication. His election is not initially recognized by the Great Powers, including Russia. He rules Bulgaria until 1918, later taking the title of Tsar.
